Reduced heat or temperature in the engine bay improves performance. Cooler airboxes result in cooler air temperature for the engine to "breathe". In turn, denser air produces more horsepower.
Since the outside of the hot, glaring exhaust is protected from the environment, the shields also reduce the possibility of fires that sometimes result from fluids/oils coming into contact with the exhaust system.
Heat shields can also be bolted to the headers without removing them.
