Designed entirely in Italy by the R&D department , this kit is the aftermarket solution that ensures a notable increase in terms of torque and power, without compromising the efficiency and the safety of the motorbike. The kit includes only Athena components of the highest quality: an aluminum cylinder with nickel-plated barrel, a forged piston for maximum resistance, and a set of gaskets produced with cutting edge.
After several prototyping and quality checks, the thermal unit was tested in extreme conditions both on the dynamometer and on the track. The result is a reliable kit that offers explosive power at low, mid and high rpm.
The Big Bore thermal unit for Yamaha YZ 450 F 2020/2022, despite the increase, can be installed without making any changes to the crankcases of the motorbike.
TECHNICAL FEATURES
The engine of the Yamaha YZ 450 F 2020-2022 is synonymous with compactness and lightness and, with the new Big Bore Athena cylinder kit, can boast excellent performance in terms of torque and power , developing over 6 horsepower compared to the original cylinder kit.
To achieve these results, Athena technicians have engineered components of the highest quality and precision:
OVERSIZED ALUMINUM CYLINDER
In addition to modifying the cylinder following Yamaha's revision of the YZ 450 F engines starting from 2020, which modified the shape and inclination of the cylinder in addition to the oil passages, Athena technicians have adapted the mechanical processes to ensure a notable increase in the bore, which reaches Ø102 mm.
Despite the increase, the R&D department has designed this kit in such a way that it is not necessary to bore the crankcases or carry out further machining.
Produced via gravity blending and subjected to thermal treatments to improve its mechanical characteristics, the Athena cylinder ensures maximum resistance even at high temperatures. The barrel is designed to guarantee maximum smoothness over time thanks to a special nickel and silicon carbide coating.

HIGH QUALITY FORGED PISTON
Designed by Athena engineers together with the cylinder to create a system that outperforms the original, the piston ensures an explosion of power superior both at low-medium speeds and at high engine speeds. The results, which also highlighted a notable increase in torque and compression ratio, were obtained with bench and track tests.
Made by reverse extrusion with maximum precision technologies, this forged piston ensures ideal sliding and features smooth profiles for perfect propagationof the flame forehead.
The segments ensure an optimized tangential load for a correct balance between lubrication and sealing, while the pin is in alloy high quality steel for maximum strength.
SEALS SERIES MADE IN ITALY
The series included in the kit includes the gaskets necessary for installing the cylinder kit, including the head and base gasket, redesigned by Athena technicians to adapt to the new oil passages of the Yamaha cylinder.< /p>
The base gasket in rubberized sheet metal presents a silicone creasing on the surfaces in the critical areas which were identified by the R&D technicians during the design. The creasing is present near the crankcase joints and is the perfect solution to avoid leakage of liquids.
The MLS head gasket (Multi-Layer Steel gasket) is instead structured with 3 slats: the external slats are in rubberized sheet metal, the central one is in AISI301 stainless steel for resist high levels of compression.
